Our Approach
Our Educational Philosophy
Our philosophy at Lualima Cooperative is to provide a nature-based, learner-led homeschooling approach that nurtures both children and parents through positive parenting and compassionate communication. We aim to support the growth of socially adept, collaborative, and adaptable youth through daily practices that align with each individual's inner compass. In collaboration with our learners, we design a range of physical compasses for mapping their feelings, the type of learning environment they need, and their level of social engagement and collaboration capacity, in order to promote self-awareness and autonomy in their learning journey. We believe that fostering self-awareness, social awareness and collaboration skills in learners is essential for their overall development and success in life and in the world.
The Laulima Mindset
Laulima- Many hands, united, community. With multiple leaders building confidence in our learner group, the common goal is to inspire safety, kindness and critical thinking in a social, collaborative learning environment for all. Our name (Lualima) is an adaptation of this beautiful word.
Educational Approaches
Child-Led Learning
These are educational practices that prioritize student empowerment and autonomy. Children are given the opportunity to actively shape their own learning experiences by creating, monitoring, and improving upon them. This is often achieved through collaboration among students, where they take on leadership roles within the learning process and teach one another. By giving students a greater degree of agency and control over their education, it becomes a pathway that is defined by the students themselves, rather than by a fixed curriculum or top-down instruction.
Project-Based Learning
This is a student-centered approach to education, which is a pedagogy that puts the needs, interests, and abilities of the students at the center of the learning process. This approach values the active participation of the students and encourages them to explore real-world challenges and problems, which is believed to lead to a deeper understanding and retention of the material. This approach is often referred to as a dynamic learning approach, as it allows for a flexible and adaptive teaching method that can respond to the changing needs of the students.
Socratic Dialogue & Academic Conversation
The Socratic method is a teaching method that is based on the idea of using questions and dialogue to stimulate critical thinking and learning. It is a form of cooperative dialogue in which questions are posed to the students to encourage them to think critically, consider different perspectives and explore their own understanding of a concept or topic. Students are guided to discover the answers for themselves. This method is used to help students develop their reasoning and analytical skills, as well as collaborative communication and serves as a springboard for strong Academic Conversation.
